When I started growing cannabis, I quickly realised that the secret to strong, healthy plants isn’t just the genetics — it’s the soil they live in and for me the best and easiest one is the Living Soil for Cannabis.
Over time, I’ve refined a soil mix that balances oxygen, moisture, nutrients, and microbial life. It’s simple, effective, and forgiving — perfect for both beginners and more advanced growers.

🌍 Why I Choose Living Soil

Unlike synthetic grows where you feed plants directly with bottled nutrients, living soil works differently. It’s a natural ecosystem that uses beneficial microbes and fungi to break down organic matter into plant-available food.

This approach has several advantages:

🪴 The Base: Plagron Lightmix + Perlite

The foundation of my mix is Plagron Lightmix, a lightly fertilized soil that offers great structure and water retention without overwhelming young plants.

To improve aeration and drainage, I blend it with 30% perlite. This ensures the roots always have enough oxygen — one of the most overlooked factors in healthy growth.

Perlite helps prevent overwatering and allows roots to grow faster by improving airflow. It also reduces compaction over time, keeping the root zone loose and active.


📏 My Layered Soil Setup

I like to build my pots with layers to improve water movement and root development:

  • Bottom 2 cm: Pure perlite – This drainage layer keeps the base from getting waterlogged.
  • Middle (main section): Plagron Lightmix + 30% perlite – This is where the roots will thrive.
  • Top 2 cm: Pure perlite – This prevents algae growth and improves surface drying, reducing the risk of fungus gnats.

This structure also encourages roots to grow deeper and spread evenly.

Now that the soil is built, we need to make it alive. That’s where BioTabs and Startrex come in.

🪱 BioTabs – Long-Term Organic Feeding

BioTabs are slow-release organic nutrient tablets packed with beneficial microbes. As they break down, they release a balanced mix of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and trace elements — all in a plant-friendly form.

They also activate microbial life, which in turn keeps nutrients cycling through the soil. This means I don’t have to constantly feed bottled nutrients — the soil does the work.
